As someone who has committed to practicing yoga on a regular basis, I can confidently say that yes, it is the key to a younger you and a healthier you. Yoga can give you back the way you felt 10 years ago. I am often asked what are the main physical benefits of doing yoga. And my answers almost always come back to these three key things. The first key thing is the flexibility that yoga provides.
You know the feeling, that feeling of getting older. Getting out of bed becomes harder. Walking up flights of stairs becomes more difficult and makes you breathe heavier. It isn’t as easy to reach down and tie your shoe as it once was.
Yoga can fix this. To an outsider it may appear as simple stretching exercises, but practicing yoga really helps increase your overall flexibility which in turn makes your entire body feel better. It is amazing how much more you are able to accomplish when your muscles don’t feel so creaky. I plan to do yoga for as long as I can to make sure I am as flexible as possible.
A question I am often asked about yoga is does this really help you lose weight? Although I view this as a side benefit to regular yoga practice, most practitioners do in fact lose body weight.
If you have ever watched someone did yoga, you may think to yourself how can this possibly promote weight loss? It is only when you’re actually in some of the asanas and sweating profusely that you realize just how yoga helps you lose weight. Not only that, but if you regularly do yoga you tend to make better choices at about what to fuel your body with. You start cutting out sugars and sweets and things that your body doesn’t need.
One of the other key factors to helping you feel younger is improving your lung capacity. Yoga helps you breathe better. Increased lung capacity helps you live better.
Everything we do is based around the breath. Everything. Do you want to have sex for a longer period of time? Would you like to climb stairs without feeling winded? The core of yoga is learning to control and master your breathing.
A huge side benefit of improved breathing is the ability to de-stress. As we all know from modern research stress truly is a killer. Controlled breathing helps control your stress level.
So all of these things combined to make yoga and absolutely ideal form of exercise to feel younger, look younger, and enjoy a healthier you.
