Can Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) be helped by practicing yoga? The answer is yes!
According to a study by the National Institutes of Health, yoga helps CTS (but they said they didn’t know why.) Well, here’s why: The reason yoga helps is because your whole body is attached to your wrist. If you get your body–your muscles–more “in balance” lots of pain complaints and symptoms will go away.
Yoga does that; it gets your muscles back in balance.
When you were a child you used all of your muscles. But when you grew up, for one reason or another, you stopped using all of your muscles. That’s why we get into pain. But when you practice yoga, you begin using all of your body once again.
You see, there can be other causes but CTS is very often caused by muscle imbalances. That means that some muscles are used more than others. Some become weaker while others are over-used. The over-used muscles tend to complain and cause symptoms. The yoga postures or movements will cause you to use all of your muscles once again.
The nurse also quoted a medical research study which compared a group of patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome who studied yoga to a group of patients who only wore a wrist brace. Guess which group had the most benefit?:-) Yes! The yoga group!
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a whole body issue and yoga is a whole body “treatment.” That’s why yoga helps.
